Why people end up needing this

Most of the calls we get are the same three situations. The family car failed the examiner's pre-test check, a burnt-out brake light, a cracked windshield in the wiper path, a horn that doesn't work. Or the only insured car in the house is at work that day. Or there's simply no car, because the person learning to drive doesn't own one yet.

The vehicle check catches more people than anything else. The examiner walks around the car before you drive a single metre, and if something's wrong the test is cancelled on the spot. You lose the fee and the appointment, and the next Collingwood slot might be two months out. Our car gets checked before every test day, so that part is off your plate.

There's a second thing that's harder to put a price on. Taking a road test in a car you've never driven is a bad idea, and that's exactly what happens when someone borrows a friend's vehicle the morning of. If you've had lessons with us, you're testing in the car you learned in. Same mirrors, same seat, same brake feel. One less thing to think about while an examiner is writing on a clipboard beside you.

How the day works

  1. 1

You book your test with DriveTest first

At drivetest.ca or by calling 1-888-570-6110. Have your licence number and expiry date ready. Worth knowing: Collingwood is a travel point, not a full centre. Examiners come over from Barrie, generally Tuesdays and Wednesdays. That's why local slots disappear so quickly.

  2. 2

Then you call us with the date and time

We confirm the car and block off the instructor. Do this as soon as you've got your appointment. A Tuesday morning in Collingwood is the busiest slot there is.

  3. 3

We pick you up with time to spare

Usually about 45 minutes before your appointment, so there's room for a proper warm-up drive. Around the Hurontario Street centre that means low speed limits from the first metre, angled parking on both sides, and the tight residential grid where the three-point turn and parallel park normally happen.

  4. 4

You take the test, we wait

The instructor doesn't ride along. Nobody does except you and the examiner. We're in the parking lot when you get back, either way. Then we drive you home.

Bring these, or the test doesn't happen

Your valid Ontario licence

The actual card. Not a photocopy, not a photo on your phone.

Your DriveTest confirmation

The email or booking number for your appointment.

Your glasses or contacts

If your licence says corrective lenses, the examiner will check.

Sensible shoes

Sandals and heavy boots have both cost people a test before.

One more, because it comes up constantly: renting our car does not book your road test. Those are two separate bookings with two separate organisations. DriveTest books the test. We book the car.

Common questions

Do I have to take lessons with you to rent the car?

No. Plenty of people book the car on its own. That said, if we've never driven with you, the warm-up drive is also us checking you're ready. If you're clearly not, we'll say so and refund the rental rather than send you into a test you're going to fail.

What if I fail?

We drive you home and talk through what the examiner flagged, because that sheet is the most useful practice plan you'll ever get. Rebooking the car for your next attempt is the same rate. No penalty, no awkwardness. A fair number of our students pass on the second try and are genuinely better drivers for it.

Can I rent the car for a G test, not just G2?

Yes, both. The G test includes highway driving, so if you're testing out of Collingwood you'll be on Highway 26. We'll spend the warm-up on merging and lane changes rather than parking.

How far ahead should I book?

As soon as DriveTest gives you a date. Collingwood only runs tests about two days a week for the whole area, Collingwood, Wasaga Beach, Stayner, Clearview, Thornbury and the Blue Mountains, so those mornings fill up on our calendar too.

What if I need to cancel?

48 hours' notice and there's no charge. Inside 48 hours, half the fee applies. If DriveTest cancels on you, there's no charge at all, just send us the notice. Full details are on our policies page.

Got your test date?

Call with the date, time and centre and we'll confirm the car in a couple of minutes. Serving Wasaga Beach, Collingwood, Stayner and the surrounding area.
