Numbers to know for the G1 test
These come straight from the MTO Driver’s Handbook and they’re the ones students mix up most often. Read them once, then see if they stick in the practice test.

| 2 seconds | Minimum following distance in good conditions — more in bad weather or behind trucks and motorcycles |
| 20 metres | How far back to stop behind a school bus with its red lights flashing |
| 5 metres | How far from the nearest rail or gate to stop when a train is coming |
| 1 metre | Minimum space when passing a cyclist, where practical |

| 60 metres | Use low beams when following another vehicle this closely |
| 150 metres | You may not follow a fire vehicle answering an alarm within this distance |
| 30 metres | No passing within this distance of a pedestrian crossover, and no passing left of the centre line near a bridge, viaduct or tunnel |

| $5,000 | Report a collision to police if anyone is hurt or damage is more than this |
| 6 days | Time to tell the ministry after you change your name or address |

Right of way in plain English
No signs or lights
The vehicle that got there first goes first. If you arrive at the same time, the driver on the left lets the driver on the right go.
All-way stop
First to come to a complete stop goes first. If two of you stop at the same time, the one on the left yields to the one on the right.
Turning
Turning left, wait for oncoming traffic and pedestrians. Turning right, wait for pedestrians and check your blind spot for cyclists.
Signalling
A signal tells people what you want to do. It never gives you the right of way — you still have to make sure it’s clear.
Common questions
What topics are in the rules part of the G1 test?
The handbook lists seatbelts, traffic signs and lights, emergency vehicles, headlights, speed limits, getting on and off a freeway, streetcars and school buses, licence suspensions, demerit points, passing, collision reporting, sharing the road and rules of the road.
What is the blood alcohol limit for a G1 driver?
Zero. G1 and G2 drivers, and all drivers 21 and under, must have a blood alcohol level of zero. The accompanying driver must be under .05.
How many demerit points before a G1 or G2 licence is suspended?
Nine or more points brings a 60-day suspension for novice drivers. You get warning letters at 2 and 6 points.
Can I practise just one topic?
Yes. In the test options, open “Practise one topic” and pick the topic you want, for example School Buses or Parking.
